How to take care of your hair during summer months

Coolangatta Hair Boutique 3

Ahh… Summer… The best season of the year. Here on the Gold Coast, the season of sun, sea and sunscreen! But just as the sun damages your skin, it can also damage your hair. During the summer months, UV rays, seawater and wind can stress hair. These factors can make the normally smooth cuticle feel rough, appear frizzy and cause long term damage.

Here at Coolangatta Hair Boutique we’re big fans of protecting hair from the elements. Here are some practical tips on how to care for your hair during summer.

Trim your hair

During summer, you will notice an increase in split ends. Unfortunately, split ends can’t be fixed with products, so a trim might be needed. Not only will this remove the split ends from your hair, but it will also refresh your look. If you’re growing your hair, it’s also worth noting that hair grows faster in the summer, so a trim won’t hinder your process too much!

Protect hair from sun damage

UV rays can really damage your hair. There are lots of products that can protect your hair from sun damage, and they can be in a form of spray, cream, or gel. For colored hair it’s also important to use protective products to keep the color from fading. If you spend most of your time outdoors, it is recommended that you wear a loose fitting hat, not only will doing this protect your hair strands from the heat of sun, but it will protect your scalp and ears.

Soak hair before swimming

Before you dive in, take a second to coat your hair in a leave in conditioner or rinse your hair under fresh water. When hair is by pre soaked, the cuticle is already full, which means it cannot absorb as many chemicals or salt water when taking a dip. It is also recommended to rinse your hair after swimming.

Take a break from the heat

It’s become a regular practice to use heat for styling. Whether blow-drying, curling rods or straightening irons. During the warmer months, we suggest that you take a break from these whenever you can. If you must use heat styling, be sure to use a protective styling product to prevent damage.

Use moisturizing shampoo and conditioner

As the hot weather also causes sweat, chances are you wash your hair more frequently, which can cause dryness. It you are going to wash your hair frequently; we recommend using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, along with regular treatments to keep your hair looking its best. Salons provide a higher quality treatment than you can achieve at home, so ask us about our treatment options next time you’re booking in a hair appointment.

Manage frizz

Salon quality wash out, and leave in conditioners can improve your hair health and reduce frizz. If your hair is particularly coarse, thick or frizzy, a keratin treatment or Japanese straightening session might be a good option for you. These can both cut down styling time and reduce frizz, while keratin actually improves the condition of your hair!
